Just a quick update to let everyone know we've arrived safe and sound.

Nicole drove us to the airport Sunday and things went about as smoothly as they can. Flight to Philly, Frankfurt and Athens all departed and landed on time. My headphones didn't work and I was too cheap to buy another pair on the overseas flight, but that didn't matter. Kim's worked fine (she watched a couple of movies) and I slept most of the time. Thankfully the overseas flight wasn't crowded so we were able to spread out.

When we arrived we were met by Matta - the friend who arranged the apartment for us. She drove us to the apartment where we met Martha, the landlady. She's lived in Greece 25 years but originally from the US. Then we all went a couple of blocks over to the sea and met Martha's husband for a meal. The 5 of us sat at at an outdoor table about 20 yards from the water. We had a wonderful mix of seafood: fried smelt, grilled octopus, fried calamari, another small fish I didn't know, pureed fava with onions, an eggplant salad and a plate of greens. They're doing us favors picking us up, renting us the apt., etc., and they picked up the tab. My first impression of Greek people is they are very generous.

Tomorrow morning we head to the Fulbright office downtown. Matta has volunteered to go with us the first time to show us how it's done. We're very fortunate.
