The piazza is packed in nicer weather (it was about 40 degrees and overcast) day and night. The square is dominated by the church of San Petronio, the fifth largest church in the world, according to Cetta (digression - before we came, she did a bunch of research and had printed out notes to be able to serve as a knowledgeable guide). The church was to be in the shape of a cross, but the construction of the two "arms" extending out was stopped by Rome, because it would have made the church larger than St. Peter's.
